Sustainable Healthcare Coalition
Video and animation
Clinical trials are essential to developing new treatments and improving healthcare. But they also have an environmental impact. With an estimated 350,000 clinical trials generating 27.5 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions between 2000 and 2021, understanding and reducing their carbon footprint is an important challenge.
The Sustainable Healthcare Coalition (SHC) is helping the healthcare sector address this challenge through its Clinical Trials Carbon Calculator, a tool designed to measure emissions, identify carbon hotspots and support more sustainable decision-making.
Beautiful Bright worked with SHC to create a short, engaging animation that introduces the challenge and explains how the calculator can help researchers and organisations take meaningful action.
The challenge was to communicate a complex, technical subject in a way that was easy to understand without oversimplifying the science.
We developed a visual narrative that moves from the scale of the problem to the opportunity for change, using clear messaging, simple illustrations and engaging motion graphics to make the information accessible.
Rather than focusing on the technical workings of the calculator, the animation highlights what it makes possible: understanding where emissions originate, identifying opportunities for reduction and making more informed decisions throughout the clinical trial process.
In just over two and a half minutes, the animation connects the environmental impact of clinical research with a practical solution.
By combining storytelling, illustration and animation, we helped SHC turn a complex methodology into an approachable introduction to its calculator, encouraging researchers and healthcare organisations to explore the tool and begin measuring their own impact.
Because understanding the problem is the first step towards changing it.
